Ahead of Ultimate Boxxer IV next week, promoter Ben Shalom talks to Boxing Monthly about his career in boxing and how the UB brand came about...

The Ultimate Boxxer tournaments have emerged as one of the most entertaining forms of boxing in recent years. The format and brand as a whole are based around entertainment, with contests being fought over 3x3 minute rounds, with a quarter, semi and final all in one night. Eight boxers compete against each other to win a cash prize of upwards of £40,000.

Ultimate Boxxer is the brainchild of Manchester's Ben Shalom, who opened up to BM about his career in boxing and how the UB brand came about.

Shalom said, "I was approached to work for a promotional company when I left university as I had been successful in promoting events within university. The things that struck me early on were how crowds were only compiled of supporters of individual fighters. It was a revolving door with fans only coming to watch one fight and then going and I felt like boxing fans deserved better than that.

"I also found out how little fighters got paid and wanted to do something about that. So along with the team, I have around me both in the UK and USA, we developed the Ultimate Boxxer concept to create nights out that are entertaining in a sense that there is something for everyone. They have all-action entertainment, quality boxing, music performances from hot acts and more. It's a night out, in essence, not just a boxing event and that allows us to pay fighters decent money for their work which is what they deserve."

The next instalment of Ultimate Boxxer comes to us on Friday 19 July from Altringham's Ice Arena and Shalom gave us a preview of what fight fans can expect from the show that will be televised on BT Sport.

He said, "It's going to be the most exciting tournament yet in my opinion. The cruiserweight division is a buzzing division on the world scene and you always get some explosive action from it and I expect nothing less on 19 July. The venue is a great venue as well and there is lots to do around the venue if you're coming for a night out and there will be some famous faces in attendance again so I am really excited and confident this will be our best show yet."

"The field itself has a mix of established talents and unknown quantities, It always makes for an exciting night and one that I really am looking forward too. The entertainment away from the ring will be first-class as well so I am very excited about this instalment of Ultimate Boxxer."
