Scorecard: Canelo vs GGG 2
In a close and absorbing contest in Las Vegas, Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez defeated Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin by a majority decision to be crowned middleweight champion of the world. Here is how Callum Rudge saw the fight for the Below The Belt podcast and BM online...
Rd 1: Close opener here, Golovkin starting a little quicker than the first fight, leading with the jab but not much more. Canelo with more variety but less activity. Golovkin round.
Rd 2: Another tight round but the better quality coming from Canelo who scored with some fantastic shots. Warming up nicely now.
Rd 3: Another very tight round but the better work coming from Canelo who is looking very comfortable. GGG doing some good work but looking a touch slow.
Rd 4: Much better from Golovkin that round, using his jab to good effect and landed a nice right hand also. Canelo coming forward but not doing enough
Rd 5: GGG’s jab is the difference here, if he was more active with it he would walk this but Canelo keeping the rounds close with some nice body work.
Rd 6: GGG landing most of his jabs and throwing in some other nice shots, Canelo landing the flashier shots but just not active enough. Needs to jab his way in.
Rd 7: Big effort from Canelo that round, very much the aggressor in this round. Walking GGG down and landing nice shots to head and body. GGG boxing well but Canelo round.
Rd 8: Very close round there, both men happy to stay in the pocket which Canelo dominated early on but GGG strong at the end. Just a GGG round.
Rd 9: A cracking round there, Canelo continuing to work hard but he just can’t avoid GGGs jab. Very close but just to GGG there.
Rd 10: Canelo looked buzzed at one point but came firing back and outworked GGG down the stretch. Canelo round.
Rd 11: Very close round again but GGG’s greater accuracy is winning him this fight. Canelo needs a big round here.
Rd 12: Both men tired but giving everything still. Canelo landing the flashier shots which he has all night and this time it’s enough to win him the round, if not the fight.
Verdict: Another fantastic and close fight, arguably better than the first but GGG’s greater size, range and engine the difference.(Official scores 114-114, 155-113 (twice) in favour of Canelo.
