Peter Shaw reports from ringside as cruiserweight prospect Chris Billam-Smith moved to 6-0 on Saturday night in Bournemouth...
Saturday night at the O2 Academy in Bournemouth saw definitely the toughest test so far for 'The Gentleman' Chris Billam-Smith.
Slovakian hard man Michal Plesnik showed that Bournemouth’s pride is no flash in the pan.
This ‘opponent’ clearly came to town confident of adding a quality scalp to his decent history of six hot wins in eight, but his fire was extinguished by the end of the fourth three-minute stanza.
CBS continually cut off the ring and intelligently fired an arsenal of smart shots, with variety and precision. He simply had too much stuff for a tough guy who had come a long way from home with the aim and belief of improving his stock.
Billam-Smith was well prepared. He was fit and he was strong, still looking good at the end of the 8x3s, as he ran out a comfortable points winner to improve his record to 6-0 (5 KOs).
All credit to CBS' father and son trainer/management Shane and Barry McGuigan plus corner man Jimmy Tibbs, who together with promoter Steve Bendall make a strong backroom team in this business of building champions, which is the mantle CBS is aiming for in a currently red-hot domestic cruiserweight division.
