I Am The Greatest – Muhammad Ali at The O2
With huge support from the British public for Muhammad Ali to receive an Honorary Knighthood, the timing for the ‘I Am The Greatest – Muhammad Ali’ exhibition at The 02 is perfect.
If you are a non-sporting fan, you will appreciate the vast collection and depth of detail included. If you are a sporting fan, you will be taken aback by the level of detail the organisers have gone to, to trace such a vast number of artefacts and footage. If you are a boxing fan – you will be bowled over.
As you enter the exhibition, a viewing arena is set up in the form of a boxing ring. Whilst watching a summary of Ali’s life in cinematic Hollywood form, the hairs will stand up on the back of your neck as you nod with recognition that he really was, ‘The Greatest’.
Anything short of meeting the man himself, you will feel engulfed in a positive slipstream of nostalgia, as you get to gaze at previously unseen video footage and photographs, dating back from his amateur days in the 1950s.
Moving into his professional glory days, you will probably be thinking, surely these aren’t the originals? Unless stated otherwise – they are! Gems such as the famous split gloves used in the bout against Henry Cooper in 1963, the boots worn against Jimmy Young in 1976, or the robe worn by Bundini Brown in the ‘Rumble in The Jungle’, embroidered with, ‘Float Like A Butterfly Sting Like a Bee’ are on full display.
On occasions when visiting museums or exhibitions, one can have a habit of skipping a room or collection. If you are a true boxing fan, historian or straight out Ali fan, you will feel that you’ve found your spiritual home. Highly recommended.
The exhibition runs until 31 August.
