A Tornado from Scotland - backed by a Cyclone from Ireland - is looking to tear a hole through the British light-welterweight division. Josh Taylor (6-0, 6 KOs), nicknamed “The Tartan Tornado”, has had only six pro bouts (all wins inside two rounds) but the 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist and his team at Cyclone Promotions are looking to surge ahead in the next 12 months, with titles in mind and a second Cyclone promotion in Scotland planned.

Now that the height of summer is upon us, the attention of the boxing world is inevitably turning to the Rio Olympics. Sweden’s record at previous Olympics is better than you might think – consisting of 11 boxing medals in the history of the modern Games, although no Swedish boxer has ever won gold (the country’s current tally is five bronze and six silver).  At Rio the country’s medal hopes will rest solely on the experienced shoulders of 36-year-old female boxer Anna Laurell, the only Swede to have qualified for the Olympics.

On Tuesday, Argentinian former titlist Marcos Maidana announced his resignation from the ring after compiling a 35-5 ledger with an astonishing 31 victories coming by way of knockout. "After a long time out of the rings and after giving it a lot of thinking since my last fight, I've decided to hang up the gloves for good,” Maidana announced via his Facebook account. “Only through a great physical and mental effort can you mix in the ring with the best of the world if winning is your goal. And I always wanted to win. Today I do not feel motivated enough, do not have the fire inside me to intend to climb those mountains again. That is why I announce my retirement."
