P4P countdown: No 7: Errol Spence Jr
Over the course of the next few days, Boxing Monthly online is counting down our latest pound for pound top ten, based on the votes of a panel comprising ten of our writers. Today we reveal the man who came seventh ...
Name: Errol Spence Jr
BM online P4P ranking: 7th (new entry from January)
Fight record: 24-0 (21 KOs)
Report card: Spence disappointingly fought just once in 2017, albeit securing a win of huge significance on 'away soil' against leading welter Kell Brook. However he has started 2018 with a bang, having already disposed of the solid former title holder Lamont Peterson in January and undistinguished mandatory contender Carlos Ocampo earlier this month. In both fights he looked the real deal.
Prospects: Although fans are desperate to see Spence tussle with Terence Crawford, Keith Thurman or the winner of the upcoming Danny Garcia vs Shawn Porter clash, those fights are likely to have to wait until 2019 or beyond. More likely Spence will fight again this year against a lower key opponent, prior to a more major match-up next year.
Total points from BM P4P ranking panel: 33 - all ten members of our panel ranked Spence in their individual top tens. His highest ranking was fifth and he is undoubtedly a potential future P4P king.
NB: Voting panel for the BM online P4P rankings were: Mark Butcher, Luke Byron, Luke G. Williams, Andrew Harrison, Paul Zanon, James Oddy, Chris Williamson, Callum Rudge, Michael Montero and Shaun Brown.
Each panellist ranked their top ten in order, with the boxer placed first receiving ten points, second nine points, third eight points and so on. Boxers were then ranked by the overall number of points accrued.
